A/B Subject Line Split Test – Finding the Winning Hook

In email marketing, the Subject Line is the single most important factor in determining your Open Rate. A small change in wording can mean the difference between a 10% and a 30% open rate.

The A/B Subject Line Split Test in SendOnyx allows you to test two different subject lines against each other. The system will automatically track which one performs better, giving you the data you need to optimize your future outreach.

How A/B Split Testing Works

When you enable this feature, the system allows you to input two distinct subject lines for a single campaign. SendOnyx will split your audience and send Version A to one half and Version B to the other half.

By analyzing the real-time stats, you can see exactly which “hook” resonated more with your audience, allowing you to double down on that style for your next broadcast.

How to Set Up an A/B Split Test

  1. Navigate to Campaign Setup: Go to the Setup step of your campaign builder.
  2. Enable the Feature: On the right-hand side, under the Campaign Optimization section, check the box for A/B Subject Line Split Test.
  3. Enter Your Hooks: You will now see two input fields in the Campaign Info section:
    • Email subject A: Enter your first variation.
    • Email subject B: Enter your second variation.
  4. Complete Setup: Fill in your Sender Info and click Save & Next to proceed to the template builder.

Pro Strategies: What Should You Test?

To get the most out of your split tests, try testing two completely different angles rather than just changing one word:

  • Benefit vs. Curiosity:
    • Subject A: How to get 500 new leads this week. (Benefit)
    • Subject B: I was shocked when I saw these numbers… (Curiosity)
  • Urgency vs. Social Proof:
    • Subject A: Only 4 hours left to grab the Apex plan! (Urgency)
    • Subject B: Why 45+ heavy hitters just joined Onyx. (Social Proof)
  • Short vs. Long:
    • Subject A: Quick question.
    • Subject B: I have a quick question about your SMTP setup…

Why Use A/B Testing in Every Campaign?

  • Eliminate Guesswork: Stop wondering if “Free” or “Complimentary” works better. The data will tell you.
  • Continuous Improvement: Over time, you will learn the “language” of your specific list, leading to consistently higher engagement.
  • Maximized ROI: Higher open rates lead to more clicks on your landing pages, which directly results in more conversions.
