How to Add an Unsubscribe Link in Your Email Template

Updated on Feb 24, 2026

While Sendonyx automatically ensures your emails are compliant, creating your own custom footer with a clear unsubscribe link is essential for professional branding. A well-designed footer builds trust and gives your subscribers a clear path to manage their preferences without hitting the “Report Spam” button.

1. Why You Need a Custom Footer

Using a generic, system-generated footer can look “robotic.” By building your own, you can:

  • Maintain Brand Voice: Keep the styling (fonts, colors) consistent with the rest of your email.
  • Include Legal Info: Add your physical office address (required by CAN-SPAM and GDPR laws).
  • Boost Trust: Show your social media links and contact information alongside the opt-out option.

2. Adding the Unsubscribe Link (The Tag)

In the Sendonyx Email Builder, you don’t need to link to an external website. You use a dynamic Personalization Tag.

How to do it:

  1. Highlight the text you want to use (e.g., “Unsubscribe here”).
  2. Click the Link icon in the editor toolbar.
  3. In the URL field, enter the unsubscribe tag: {UNSUBSCRIBE_URL}
  4. Save your template.
💡
Pro Tip: You can also use the Preference Center tag: [UPDATE_PROFILE_URL]. This allows users to change their email address or interests instead of leaving your list entirely.

3. Best Practices for Your Footer

To stay out of the “Promotions” or “Spam” tabs, your footer should be clear and legible.

  • Contrast: Ensure the text is easy to read. Avoid light grey text on a white background.
  • Address Requirement: Laws in the US (CAN-SPAM) and EU (GDPR) require you to include a valid physical postal address. You can use a P.O. Box if you work from home.
  • The “Reason” Sentence: It’s a great practice to remind people why they are receiving the email (e.g., “You are receiving this because you signed up for Onyx updates at sendonyx.com”).
⚠️
Never Hide the Link: If Sendonyx detects that you have hidden the unsubscribe link or made it the same color as the background, your campaign may be automatically paused. Transparency is the key to high deliverability.

4. Test Your Link

Before sending to your entire list, always send a Test Email to yourself. Click the unsubscribe link in the test email to ensure it leads to the correct confirmation page.

ℹ️
Pro Tip: What is a Segment? A Segment is a dynamic subset of your list. Unlike a static list, a segment automatically updates based on subscriber behavior (e.g., people who opened an email in the last 30 days).
