Setting Up “DMARC” (The 2026 Industry Standard)

In 2026, DMARC is no longer “optional” for businesses. Gmail and Yahoo now require a DMARC record for all senders. Without it, your emails will either be rejected or flagged with a “Security Warning” banner. DMARC tells email servers exactly what to do if someone tries to spoof your domain.

1. What is DMARC?

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) is a security layer that sits on top of your SPF and DKIM records. It provides instructions to the receiving mail server on how to handle emails that fail authentication.

  • SPF/DKIM: Prove you are the sender.
  • DMARC: Tells the world what to do if the proof is missing.

2. Creating Your DMARC Record

A DMARC record is a simple TXT record added to your DNS settings (Cloudflare, GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.). For 99% of Sendonyx users, a standard “p=none” policy is the perfect starting point.

The Record Details:

  • Type: TXT
  • Host/Name: _dmarc
  • Value: v=DMARC1; p=none;
💡
What does “p=none” mean? This is a “Monitoring” policy. It tells Gmail: “If an email fails authentication, let it through, but send me a report.” It is the safest way to start without accidentally blocking your own legitimate emails.

3. Understanding the 2026 Strict Policies

While p=none gets you through the door, as your brand grows, you may want to move to stricter enforcement:

  • p=quarantine: Sends unauthenticated emails directly to the Spam folder.
  • p=reject: The most secure level. Gmail will bounce any email that isn’t signed by your official SPF/DKIM.
⚠️
Don’t Rush to “Reject”: Only move to p=reject if you are 100% sure that all your email-sending tools (Sendonyx, Support Desks, CRM) are correctly authenticated. If you miss one, your own emails will be deleted by the receiver.

4. How to Verify

Once you add the record in your DNS provider, it can take up to 24 hours to propagate. You can check your status in the Sendonyx Domain Verification tab. If you see a green checkmark next to DMARC, you are officially compliant with the latest 2026 standards.
